The Antikythera mechanism is one of the worlds oldest computers, and dates all the way back to100 B.C.E.. In 1901 A.D., the artifact was discovered in a Roman shipwreck off the coast of southern Greece. Scientists have theorized that the device displays the movements of the moons and planets. Over the last decade the theory has been proven by scientists who have used X-rays to view the device internally. The complexity of the device is said to exceed medieval cathedral clocks, developed over a thousand years later. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/11/061129-ancient-greece.html

Greek Society Ancient Greece was a democracy which had advanced mathematics and science. Free citizens had a lot of free time to pursue intellectual interests, such as astronomy, mathematics, science, and philosophy, because many people owned slaves who did most of the work. However, Greece was not all the same everywhere. For instance, in Athens people were more focused on education and philosophy, whereas Sparta was highly focused on war and physical endurance. Highly sophisticated objects, like the Antikythera mechanism, were most likely made by a higher social class. The people that made this device probably excelled in craftsmanship and mathematical skills.
